About the toolkit:

This is a project initiated and executed by Fundacja Sztuki Współczesnej in collaboration with Dansverkstæðið and Improv for Dance Enthusiasts. This website functions as an online archive for improvisational exercises for teachers, amateurs, beginners, professionals, and enthusiasts from other disciplines. Each exercise is written and uploaded by an individual; thus, the style and degree of detail vary between entries. It is up to the facilitator to interpret and change the exercises depending on the situation and bodies participating. Nevertheless, we encourage every user to contact us if they want to make improvements to an exercise.

Improv for Dance Enthusiasts [IS/PL/NL/FN/SH/DE]
[admin]

Improv for Dance Enthusiasts is a dance collective that organises weekly dance classes in improvisation, contact improvisation, and partnering, as well as dance jams with live music by local musicians. It also works project-based, with funding to research the possibilities of improvisation.

We stand for inclusivity and transparency towards our participants and create an open learning environment for both beginners and experienced dance enthusiasts to share their passion for dance.

The collective was formed in 2020 and is run by four foreign artists living in Iceland: Janosch Bela Kratz, Linde Hanna Rongen, Magdalena Tworek, and Yelena Arakelow. We occasionally work with an extended circle of dance facilitators to ensure diversity in teaching.

Hi, I am Janosch Bela Kratz. I grew up in rural Germany and live in Reykjavik, Iceland. I am the admin of this page and also the programmer and designer. Since 2021, I have been part of the collective “Improv for Dance Enthusiasts”. I hold two master's degrees in Critical Design and Communication Design. In the past, I have been part of several collectives like “NoFoundry” [2018 – 2021], a student-run Typefoundry and “Nordic Noise” [2022 – 2024], a curatorial exploration of the Nordic art world. Currently, I am part of “HINUM MEGIN/the other side” [2025], a curatorial collective in Reykjavík and “Bizarre Image” [2024], a platform for experimental storytelling.

Magdalena Tworek [IS/PL]
[author]

Hi, my name is Magdalena Tworek (she/her). I practice movement and performance from multiple perspectives and in a variety of formats, with a strong emphasis on presence, sensing and improvisation.
Working with improvisation offers me space and time to explore my own being, the interconnectedness of all things, and our relationships with both human and non-human worlds. As a facilitator and educator, I aim to share what I am discovering while staying open to what emerges in each encounter—learning and creating together, over and over and again and again.

And now, what is present in you?

by Fundacja Sztuki Współczesnej & Dansverkstæðið in collaboration with Improv for Dance Enthusiasts
Welcome fellow Enthusiast!

Please read the following instructions to be able to use the toolkit:
This platform is an archive for exercises in the sphere of movement improvisation. They are sorted in four categories for better navigation:

Main
Open Space

Exercises avaiable are displayed as dots in the columns to the right. →

5

Exercises of one category are sorted by duration in minutes indicated by the blue numbers

5
[5]

To access information of a certain exercise you can click on the dot and the details will be revealed in this part of the website. Here you can find parameters like duration, amount of participants, if touch is required or not, etc. ...

On the top of the page you can find two buttons:

Board/Table switch
Switch between different displays of the exercises. The tabl few offers more overview whilest the Borad view is more exploratory.

Filters
Filters allow you to display exercises that offer a certain dynamic, target a certain body area, are written by a certain person or part of a methodology.

↓ The area on the bottom of the tool is to compose your own class segment. If you like an exercise you can simply drag and drop the dot on this area and it will be added to your segment. If you have gathered more than one exercise you are able to rearrange them in a new order. It is not possible to save the selection yet.
